What we plant: Loop-root Mangrove

A small to medium sized mangrove species found on the coasts and river banks in East Africa and the Indo-Pacific region (native to Madagascar where they are planted!). Mangroves were chosen because they’re benefits are so multi-faceted. They are one of the most efficient and economic ways to absorb carbon emissions from the atmosphere.mangrove root

Where we plant: Madagascar

The mangroves are planted on a protected and dedicated plot of land in Madagascar, where they also happen to be a native species. In addition to being the most cost-effective and methodical ways to reduce carbon emissions, our jeans for trees mission also aids in the poverty crisis in the area by creating jobs for local villagers. For every 100 trees that are planted, 1 full day of work is created for someone in need.

Mind-blowing Facts

According to a study, Mangroves isolate carbon at a rate two-four times more than mature tropical forests and contain “the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems.” (Fatoyinbo et al, 2017)

Even though mangroves account for less than 1% of total area of tropical forests, they account for 3% of carbon sequestered by the world’s tropical forests.

Mangroves can also help fight coral bleaching. Young corals grow among mangrove roots and mangrove forests can provide shelter for coral species that are at risk of extinction.
